Lilia Kulikova is the creator of Yuri.ko, a wearable art brand rooted in a deep and longstanding love of Japanese traditional arts. A professional psychologist as well as a practicing artist, Lilia first visited Japan in 2002 and describes the experience as a turning point. A country unlike any other, where ancient tradition and contemporary life exist in genuine, unhurried dialogue.
Her immersion in Japanese culture began with sumi-e, the meditative practice of monochromatic ink painting, which she studied for ten years. From there she explored ikebana, sashiko embroidery, and shibori, the centuries-old Japanese technique of dyeing and shaping fabric. She works with vintage and traditional textiles, transforming their histories into new forms through careful and considered making. For Lilia, creativity is not a leisure pursuit but something closer to a necessity. She sees the making of things by hand as fundamental to what it means to be human, a source of meaning, vitality, and connection. |
