Oxana Arefin is an interdisciplinary artist and psychologist, born in Moscow, Russia, to a Russian-Ukrainian family. In 2014, she emigrated to New Zealand and currently lives and works in Australia.
Her practice spans photography, painting, and mixed media, functioning as both personal expression and therapeutic inquiry. Through her work, she weaves together the conscious and unconscious, the visible and the felt. Guided by the belief that human experience lives in the body and reveals itself through image, metaphor, and memory, Oxana creates visual spaces where emotion, time, and self-awareness converge. She employs raised forms, translucent textures, and dimensional layering to break free from flat representation—constructing psychological portals that invite viewers to explore the landscape of their inner world. Her images do not dictate meaning—they evoke it. Each piece unfolds slowly, inviting the viewer not as a passive observer but as a co-creator of meaning, activating the work through personal emotional resonance. This is not art to be consumed—it is art to be lived in. |
Oxana’s works have received recognition at various competitions and biennales, earning awards and distinctions. Her pieces are held in private collections across the United States, France, Russia, and New Zealand.

Chronicles of Life Triptych - Relationship. Freedom. Balance
by Oxana Arefin
Mixed media
198 x 61 cm
2022
Chronicles of Life – Relationship. Freedom. Balance explores the passage of time and its transience. The outlines of people and objects in these works are shadows of the past, imprinted on the canvas.
We all live our lives differently, but what matters is what we carry forward—and how it empowers us to remain present.
Relationship. We form many relationships in life. Some we are grateful for. Perhaps these are the ones that shape us most, offering essential experiences that help us move through life.
Freedom. Where does it begin? What does freedom mean for each of us?
Balance. The inner and the outer are always in motion. Sometimes, this motion feels against us. But at other times, the lightest touch is enough to shift everything.
This work is dedicated to all those who, for various reasons, have lost their homes, countries, or established ways of life—and who now strive for the future or search for belonging.
