Svetlana Prokhorova is a Brisbane-based artist whose practice is deeply rooted in the legacy of the Avant-garde and Russian Constructivism. Born in the USSR, Svetlana began her artistic education in a traditional academic-style art school. After a long hiatus in her creative journey, she reignited her passion for art upon immigrating to Australia, dedicating this new chapter of her life to the study of art history and contemporary practice.
Svetlana holds a Master of Fine Art from the National Art School in Sydney (2021), where she majored in Printmaking. Her work examines the historical trajectory of Avant-garde art, exploring its evolution from a declaration of freedom and progress to a tool of oppression, and its subsequent revival as a contemporary aesthetic in graphic design and urban art. Her art is informed by personal experiences with Soviet symbolism and draws on the visual language of Cubism, Constructivism, and Geometric Abstraction. She finds inspiration in the works of Braque, Picasso, Kandinsky, Malevich, and Rodchenko, integrating their bold and innovative approaches into her practice. As a contemporary artist, Svetlana utilizes the visual language of Avant-garde —minimal abstract forms and symbolic use of colour—to convey complex ideas and emotions in an accessible manner. Her works often reflects themes of individuality, societal influence, and the interplay between personal identity and urban environments. |

Hello?
By Svetlana Prokhorova
Acrylic on canvas
76 x76 cm
This striking portrait masterfully blends Avant-garde aesthetics with contemporary influences, reflecting the growing popularity of stylised and visually bold imagery in digital culture. The subject’s large, expressive eyes and delicate yet powerful facial structure evoke a sense of mystery and strength, embodying a modern interpretation of feminine beauty that resonates with today’s visual trends. The smooth, porcelain-like complexion contrasts with the sharp geometric elements, symbolising the duality often explored in modern femininity—softness and strength, elegance and rebellion.
The influence of anime and manga culture is evident in the subject’s oversized eyes, which convey emotion and intensity, a hallmark of feminine characterisation in Japanese pop art.
The bold colour-blocking and geometric deconstruction recall the innovations of Cubism and Russian Constructivism, pioneered by artists like Pablo Picasso, Tamara de Lempicka, and Alexandra Exter—who often redefined the female form through abstraction and stylization. The composition’s angular headpiece and structured clothing give the subject an almost futuristic, commanding presence, reminiscent of fashion-forward, high-concept depictions of women in fantasy and sci-fi.
This fusion of feminine portraiture, avant-garde abstraction, and anime-inspired stylization results in a powerful, contemporary artwork that speaks to the evolution of female identity, empowerment, and digital-age aesthetics. It stands at the crossroads of fine art, anime culture, and social media trends, capturing the essence of the modern woman—bold, enigmatic, and timelessly captivating.
