Vera Alexanderova is a Sydney-based textile and felt artist with a background in fashion design and professional experience in visual communication and advertising.
For over twenty years, she has been developing a distinctive artistic language through working with wool and natural fibres. Her practice combines Australian merino wool (18–20 microns) with silk and a wide range of natural materials, including various types of raw fleece and curls. In recent years, her work has increasingly focused on large-scale wall pieces, where she explores the relationship between material, texture and colour. These works are constructed through layering, manual dyeing and controlled shrinkage, resulting in complex, tactile surfaces that balance density and transparency. A defining aspect of her practice is the principle of seamless construction: all forms are created directly through the felting process, without sewing or assembly. This approach allows for a high level of structural integrity and material coherence. Originally working in Moscow, her early pieces were shaped by a cold climate and resulted in dense, sculptural forms. After relocating to Australia, her work evolved towards lighter, more fluid and painterly expressions, influenced by the light, textures and spatial qualities of the Australian landscape. |
Her works have been presented in solo exhibitions and featured in professional textile publications. She is a two-time recipient of the Standard of Excellence award at the Royal Easter Show (Australia).
Alongside her artistic practice, she conducts in-person and online workshops, sharing her techniques and approach to working with material. |
